4D, Purpose, and the Power of Play

Thank you to everyone who helped make last weeks 4D Symposium such a meaningful油community event.油It was energizing to see油the 91心頭 community engage油with油purpose not油only油as an abstract idea, but as a practice that comes to life in classrooms, advising, mentorship, community engagement, and the many everyday touchpoints that define油our students油experience.油
I油would油like to share a few highlights:油
- Professors油Ileya Grosman and Rolfe Larson油discussed油how vital relationships are to human health and development and invited attendees to reflect油on how we can create油learning environments at 91心頭 that foster human connection油|油Designing Lives of Purpose油Workshop油
- CAHSS faculty油shared how they are pairing classroom learning with community and industry experiences to help students build confidence, gain skills, and油connect with their purpose and lifelong goals油|油4D Fridays: Embedded Career Readiness油Panel油
- Students, faculty, and staff油discussed the question, What if purpose was油the purpose of higher education?油|油4D Coffeehouse油
- Public油and private sector leaders油came to油campus油to油discuss油the油skills and mindsets that are becoming increasingly important油at油work油|油The Future of Work油Panel油
Student-led Experience on Play油油
I also want to油dive deeper油into油one example of how油students油themselves油are helping 91心頭 offer a unique, customizable,油and holistic油learning experience.油油
意鞄艶油 have been exploring油how油the act of play can build connection, invite reflection, and油create personal clarity around purpose. This油work culminated in a油play-focused油event outside the油symposium油that invited students to油pause,油participate, and connect.油Beneath the油easy-to-dismiss油surface of fun, play油can support油cognitive flexibility油and油emotional regulation, while helping油students build skills around navigating uncertainty through trial and error.油The success of this experiment makes one wish we could schedule a油recess油in油every油day.油油
These outcomes dovetail directly with the 4D Experience, especially our commitments to character and well-being油by油developing the inner resources students need to manage stress, build relationships, and lead with curiosity, empathy, and resilience.油As we continue to deepen the 4D Experience, I encourage each of us to notice where play already shows up in our work and where we might make more space for it.油
