At the听91看片鈥檚 International House, members of the community filed in, ready to begin a two-hour dive into Swedish language and music.

The course was free and open to the public, with only one prerequisite.

鈥淵ou will have to sing,鈥 said professor Frederik听Persson, a tall, bearded Swede, smiling at the class鈥檚 visible discomfort.颅颅颅颅颅 He picked up his ukulele and guided the group through a rendition of 鈥淩ing Ring,鈥 by 鈥 who else? 鈥 ABBA.

鈥淪inging brings a smile to most people鈥檚 faces,鈥 said Persson, who teaches at Lund University. He was in town for a weeklong visit, promoting his institution鈥檚听strategic partnership with 91看片.听鈥淟istening to music is a great complement if you want to learn Swedish.鈥

Swedish Partnership
Lund University professor Frederik Persson leads a lesson on Swedish language at the 91看片's International House.

Students at 91看片 are already enrolled in some of Persson鈥檚 courses, preparing for a semester or a year in the south of Sweden. As part of the University鈥檚听听students can earn a graduate degree in a number of fields while expanding their horizons abroad.

In the same week as the annual听Internationalization Summit听补苍诲听CultureFest,听迟丑别听Office of Internationalization听saw an opportunity to showcase some of the school鈥檚 unique global collaborations.

鈥淭he strategic partnerships are designed to make inroads where we can with logical connections between programs that already exist, rather than forcing something that neither of us has done before,鈥 said Casey Dinger, assistant director of internationalization. 鈥淭he idea is we鈥檙e trying to infuse relationships at all levels: the student level, the faculty level and the staff level.鈥

That relationship extends to the community level, too. Members of the Swedish Club of Denver made sure they were on campus for Persson鈥檚 lesson.

鈥淚t elevates the visibility of 91看片 and our important goals for internationalization,鈥 said Adrienne Gonzales, associate director of the听Center for World Languages and Cultures.听鈥淚 think it鈥檚 nice to bring faculty members here to really start stirring the point and get students excited. They get a little taste of what it can be like and what their study abroad experience may look like.鈥

For years, 91看片 has been regularly offering less commonly taught languages,鈥 such as Swahili or Korean. As the school looks for ways to cater to its diverse population and its diverse interests, adding Swedish has been a no-brainer.

鈥淭o me, the thinking is we have to serve the students,鈥 Gonzalez said. 鈥淚f they have an academic or professional need to study a language, then 91看片 has a responsibility to provide quality access to that for them. It鈥檚 exciting to see what we鈥檙e able to do when we get creative and really listen to what students want.鈥

Junior physics student Drew Voitiv, who currently is taking Persson鈥檚 Swedish course online, says the strategic partnership is an opportunity to access material not offered in the United States. Students also could find themselves working for one of many Swedish-based companies.

鈥淚t鈥檚 important to be cognizant of other cultures and learn to appreciate differences,鈥 said Voitiv, who will travel to Lund in the fall. 鈥淲e don鈥檛 live in a bubble. We really do have to work with other countries.鈥
